Horsetail Falls' Fire Fall in California flows only in winter and spring. Most days the falls has a regular color. But every February, for just a couple of days, Horsetail Falls turns into a "fire fall". As the sun sets, and dips behind the horizon line, everything will begin to go dark and it will seem, for a moment, as if the fire fall has failed to ignite. But as the last of the sunlight disappears it will hit and reflect off the falls at the exact right angle creating a spectacular, if short lived, effect which looks like a beautiful flowing cascade of fluid fire.

The name "Iguazu" comes from the Guarani or Tupi words y , meaning "water", and ûasú [waˈsu], meaning "big". Legend has it that a god planned to marry a beautiful woman named Naipí, who fled with her mortal lover Tarobá in a canoe. In rage the god sliced the river, creating the waterfalls and condemning the lovers to an eternal fall. The first European to find the falls was the Spanish Conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541.
